Helpful Moving Guide


We thought you might find useful this list of things to do leading up to your move.

Six weeks before moving
1. Decide which items you will move, donate to charity, throw away or sell. Prepare a household inventory of all items to be moved.
2. Decide which items you will pack and what the moving company will pack.
3. Start planning your garage sale.
4. Decide what day to begin packing.
5. Get written estimates from at least three moving companies.

Four weeks before moving
1. Send change of address cards to post office, banks, insurance companies, family and friends, subscriptions, credit card companies.
2. Check with your moving company about what may and may not be transported (i.e. paints, liquids, alcohol, hazardous material).
3. Request packing material from your moving company if you are going to be packing items yourself.
4. Transfer or close school records, medical/dental records, veterinary records, safe deposit box, legal records, insurance, financial accounts and other personal services.
5. Have garage sale. Donate or discard unsold or unwanted items.

Three weeks before moving

1. Clean clothes, rugs, curtains for packing and moving.
2. Arrange to move or board pets.
3. Begin packing.

Two weeks before the move
1. Set cut-off dates for utilities, phone, newspaper, garbage collection.
2. Return library books.
3. Start using up your food items.
4. Arrange for appliance disconnection and reconnection.
5. Make appoint for cable or satellite to be hooked up.
6. Arrange for utilities, phone connection and newspaper delivery.
7. Change your address with USPS, your bank, and any other services that can transfer.

A week before moving
1. Assemble a "survival kit" for travel and the first days in your new home.
2. Make a moving day checklist so you don't forget any of those last minute things.
3. Begin packing suitcases.
4. Arrange for babysitter on moving day.
5. Get traveler's checks.

The day before moving
1. Finish packing items and valuables you will personally carry with you.
2. Defrost and clean refrigerator. Clean oven and microwave.
3. Clearly mark any items not intended for the move.
4. Disconnect all electrical devices.
5. Vacuum all carpets and rugs, dispose of perishable food and plants.
6. Ensure that all services are cancelled gas, electricity, water, phone, garbage and newspapers.
7. Get a good night's sleep!

Moving Day
1. Check your moving day checklist so you don't forget any of those last minute things.
2. Strip beds, pack sheets, pillows and blankets.
3. Be available to answer questions, check loading inventory with the driver, sign papers and advise loading crew of any special requests.
4. Make final check of all rooms and storage areas.
5. Lock doors and windows. Turn of lights. Leave keys with responsible person.

After Moving Day

1. Submit moving expenses to your employer.
2. Change the locks on all of your doors.
3. Establish a file for all warranties and Real Estate documents; keep receipts of the move for taxes.
4. Report change of address to Department of Motor Vehicles for driver's licenses and car registrations.
5. Find a doctor, dentist, and veterinarian.
